The Door To Hell

30 Mar

The Door to Hell, a cavern generously filled with natural gas, was discovered in 1971 by Soviet geologists. This gas rich area is situated near the village of Derweze, Turkmenistan 40°15′10″N 58°26′22″E. While drilling, the ground beneath the rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of 70 meters / 250 ft behind. Authorities decided to burn the gas to avoid toxic discharge. The gas is still burning today, even though geologists initially estimated that the fire would use all the fuel in a matter of days.

Scottish Oils, a subsidiary the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (BP), started the Grangemouth Refineryin 1924. In addition to the large accessible areas of reclaimed flat land, the adjacent docks made the location ideal as it supported crude oils imported by ship from the Middle East.

And, no, the refinery is not on fire, just lit by the occasional sunset.

Ponte Rotto, meaning broken bridge, is the oldest Roman bridge built in stone. In the late 1500s the eastern half destroyed in a flood and the remaining half was dismantled in the 1880s. All that remains today of this over two thousand year old bridge is this single arch.

Ettore Roesler Franz painted Ponte Rotto around 1880.
