That means you, Greece.

Michael Tory, former head of U.K. investment banking at Lehman Brothers, just published an op-ed in the Financial Times suggesting that what European policymakers need most right now is not to pull the region's tenuous economy back from the ledge but to get down on their knees and take a good hard look into the darkness that awaits…

I'm Going Google (...or I'm Going Crazy)

4 Jun

For the next two weeks, I’m “going Google.” I’ll be fully dependent upon Google’s platforms, hardware, and approved methods. I’ll be working off of a Chromebook, Chromebox, and Android phone, and using Google’s Web apps. Changing my operating system so drastically may seem crazy, but there are honest, practical motivations behind it.

I’ve found that there’s a trend growing in product and platform reviews, where writers say things like, “I’ve been playing around with the app all morning”, or “I’m writing this right now on a Chromebook”, or “I’ve been testing this phone for the last couple of days” as if any of these bears credibility to the review.

Christabel Gough, the secretary for the Society for the Architecture of the City and a resident of the Greenwich Village Historic District, has a simple, to the point message for New Yorkers: Beware. Banker Angst: The Inside Story (With Pictures)

4 Jun

Reblogged from Business & Money:

Bankers and others in the business of finance aren’t exactly winning any popularity polls at the moment. The Facebook IPO has many complaining that the investment game is rigged. 4 Jun

Reblogged from Piers Morgan:

On Friday's episode of "Piers Morgan Tonight," guest host Bill Maher tried his satirical hand at "Only in America," using the fill-in platform to address an issue equal parts monarch and morbid.

"I'm not British - but I did see the King's Speech - so I'll give this Only in America thing a try," Maher began.

But with apologies to Morgan's countryman…

On the cover of her new book, American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America, Michelle Obama is smiling into the camera and holding a huge basket of vegetables, the bounty of a garden planted, she writes, as “a starting point for something bigger.” That something bigger is the first lady's campaign to get Americans -- and especially children -- thinking differently about what they eat.

Video: 'Orvillecopter' sends beloved cat to fly with birds

4 Jun

Reblogged from Metro News:

Well, this is one way to pay tribute to a beloved pet.

When Orville -- named after Orville Wright -- was sadly struck and killed by a car, owner and visual artist Bart Jansen thought the best way to honour him was to send him aloft like his namesake to hopefully join the birds as a tabby helicopter.

After several test flights filmed with a lousy camera, the latest of which you see here, the Orvillecopter still has trouble keeping altitude, which Jansen says will be fixed by more powerful engines and larger props.

And so the Grexit continues to be nigh: George Soros may handicap Greece's June 17 election in favor of the pro-bailout parties deemed more likely to keep the nation in Europe's monetary union, but better-safe-than-sorry still applies. If you're a Greek saver, that may mean stashing some euros under your mattress. If you're the British banknote printer De La Rue, it means…
