The Japanese Consulate has confirmed that a 65-foot, concrete-and-foam dock that washed ashore in Washington’s Olympic National Park in late December 2012 is in fact one of three* docks from the fishing port of Misawa, Japan. These docks were swept out to sea during the earthquake and tsunami off of Japan in March 2011, and this is the second dock to be located.

Why everybody is freaking out about India

22 Jun

Reblogged from Financial Post | Business:

India's GDP slowed to 5.3 percent in the January to March quarter. Since then S&P has warned that the country could lose its investment grade, and Fitch revised India's outlook to 'negative'.

Sentiment has turned against India not just on a slew of weak economic data, but also the country's political unwillingness to implement reforms, and on allegations of corruption.

China Weekend Economic Data: Weaker Industrial Production, Retail, and CPI

As if you had not guessed that China's weekend releases of economic data were going to be weak after that surprise rate cut late in the week, the tally is out and it is weak on all fronts.  The U.S. and other major industrial nations would kill for growth numbers like these.  China just requires higher numbers from the National Bureau of Statistics of China for the world to be growing more.

In the supposed workers’ paradise of North Korea, inequality is assigned at birth, a study by a U.S.-based human rights group says.

Education, jobs, access to scarce food and health care, and even whom you marry all hinge on how loyal your forebears are viewed to have been to the Kim dynasty that took power six decades ago.

The study released Wednesday by the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea says all adults in the socialist state are categorized as one of three classes: loyal, wavering or hostile.

The body of Shriya Shah-Klorfine, a Canadian woman who died while returning from the summit of Mount Everest, has been brought off the world’s tallest mountain.

A spokesman from Utmost Adventure Trekking says Shah-Klorfine’s body has been taken via helicopter from Mount Everest to her family in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu.

Ganesh Thakuri says a team of climbers managed to bring the Toronto woman’s remains down from an area more than 8,000 metres above sea level to a camp within helicopter rescue range on Monday, but bad weather prevented the body from being flown off the peak right away.

There are all kinds of futuristic-looking energy-efficient light bulbs on the market -- not just the traditional piggy-tail model, but liquid-cooled bulbs that look like glass jellyfish, and bulbs with gills like a mushroom or fins like a Cadillac. But for our money, this wooden bulb by artist Ryosuke Fukusada is the most beautiful energy-efficient light fixture going. (And yes, it really is a light fixture.)

Reflection Of Mineral

The site is located near the center of Tokyo. It is a small 44 m²  corner plot bounded by two streets. Conforming to legal conditions and in response to the client’s wish for a ‘roofed garage’ the volume was trimmed from various directions. Using the words ‘Mineral’ and ‘reflection’ as guiding concepts, Atelier Tekuto proceeded to use subtraction as a positive tool for design.

BBC Hardtalk About One Of The World’s Most Influential Investors:

«Aged five, Jim Rogers was selling peanuts for profit. He became a hedge fund pioneer, a commodities trader and, years ago, he shifted much of his money, and his family too, out of the US and into Asia. But can even this maverick investor see new opportunities in a world riddled with economic uncertainty?
We need some brave leadership and knowledgeable decision making in the UK and elsewhere to bring back our manufacturing from China, enact agricultural and energy reforms and the necessary fiscal and monetary control/planning. Maybe then Jim would bring back some of his money to invest here given the opportunity.»
